I do not like this genre in general due to the scary monster voice, but the overall product seems very nicely done and thoughtfully mixed. I would recommend to folks who like the genre.

The lyrics are kinda cheesy but in a really, good, heartfelt way that tell me you really love the game. Well produced. I don’t like growls so it took enjoyment away from me, but for those who like it I think they’ll like this track a lot.

The mix and instrumentation remind me of a Tales battle track by Motoi Sakuraba. This is super clean and well balanced.
Never Forget Her Name
Game(s): Fire Emblem Awakening
Despite having never played Fire Emblem, I can absolutely imagine that 2D battlefield and the little sprites moving up and down. PERFECTLY encapsulates the experience of holding the controller and sending your heroes to battle.

This is beautiful. I don’t know the source material so I can’t say what is your addition vs original, but I love the progression from gentle guitar to adding percussion and electric guitar to a full “rock feel”. The way you let the guitar notes really sing and extend naturally on the acoustic guitar give it a really airy quality, and I also appreciate that you didn’t overcomplicate this. The electric rock stuff gets the exact feeling it needs, with no crazy solos to distract and detract. Excellent!

Not my personal cup of tea, but definitely evokes “shopping in the rain” and memories of some City Pop.

Game(s): Mario Kart DS
This is a really solid jazz arrangement. It strays pretty fair from the original track, which is both a good and bad thing depending on the audience. Excellently produced, reminds me a lot of Pat Metheny. I love the ending breakdown on this, definitely elevated the song for me.

The use of a DS-style compression on part of the track is really inspired, and the contrast makes the uncompressed stuff really pop when you get out of the compression. Great drum break. I’d love to see this performed live.

I’m sure other folks will have intelligent things to say about the rock & roll aspects, but two things that stood out to me as excellent: 1. The vocal harmonies in the later parts of the song are really nice, and not an obvious requirement. Their use shows critical thought on how to really lean into the style. 2. The lyrics feel fully developed and fleshed out, which I don’t always expect for DoD. I could absolutely see the Protomen or Cybertronic Spree playing something with these lyrics.

I love the source material, and the electronic components are super well done. I wish the vocals had a little more attitude or edge to them, and sometimes they seemed a little out of rhythm. Really solid work though!

This is 100% authentic to the mixing, style, and performance of a Layton game. If you told me this was an official live track, my only note would be a slight surprise at the use of electric keyboard. Truly excellent work, I’ll be downloading this to listen to later.

Game(s): Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Great use of horns and great balance mixing; feels like I can hear the distinct horns without them becoming a nebulous mass. I love when the percussion drops out and it becomes a little bit of a round. The adding and removing of layers/instruments overall is really thoughtfully done and has great effect of keeping the piece live and exciting. Probably in my top 5 DoD tracks of the past six months, though I’m biased in loving jazz. Truly excellent work, I’ll be downloading this to listen to later.

I LOVE the variety of instruments, from mongolian throat singing to whistling (for real, love that singing). The Andean flute stylings really sell the “Dragon Roost Island” feel. Well produced, mixed, and played by all instruments. Always love hearing more than jazz horns and metal guitars. Both a really neat piece of music to listen to on its own, but also very evocative of Zelda games.

What a lovely weird prog adventure. Honestly, one of the most creative tracks / interpretations I’ve heard in my 6 months as a part of DoD. I appreciate the authenticity of leaving in the breaths and shortened notes on the sax during the intro section, and I really enjoy the tone of the horn during the solo. The runs were nuts! After the intro, the clean mixing was a really nice contrast to the mindfuck of the beginning, which also then makes the guitar sounds of the C(?) section stand out when they get all grungey-ampy. You’ve turned Frank Zappa into Frank Zelda; either way, he’s jamming out in his grave with a big ol’ smile.

The vocal performance is so gooooood! I’m very picky about my doom metal – I feel like the way the dynamics are laid out is kind of static but maybe that’s good for the style – I can’t speak to that. I would say that I see folks mentioning the drum mix and it definitely could be a little bit more solid. Again maybe some extra love and layers to give it more interstitial arcs beyond the 6 minutes.
apollo justice but it’s disco probably
Game(s): Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
This had a groove and I love the idea. This is really let down to me by some of the performances getting out of phase lock with the drums. I think that if you were able to take a few more passes at getting everything to be SUPER TIGHT this would go from being a good little cover to being amazing
BLOOD
Game(s): Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
This was crazy. I’m so prog loving and this had just enough changes to keep my attention for the full 8 minutes. I think that maybe the vocals could have been a little bit mixed more “in” right now they feel like pop vocals rather than prog metal vocals, especially since we’re not talking about like Pain of Salvation levels of vocal acrobatics. Otherwise – dang I love this. The acoustic section was lovely and the performances are so top notch.
Rhapsody of the Forsaken
Game(s): Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
All I can say is this guitar tone Maybe the rhythms could be a smidge less in the 4k range???? I’m reaching for feedback honestly. The tones are good maybe the lead performance could be a little more lyrical with some heavier vibrato at points.
Late Night Stroll
Game(s): Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
This reminds me of that seen with Edward in FF4. The vibes are good and the performances are super good. When it’s a chill track you have to get every ounce of dynamics out as possible – and this could use some more tempo as if it were a live performance in the room. It’s a lot of effort but the payoff can be big.
Never Forget Her Name
Game(s): Fire Emblem Awakening
This was a cool track. I think it was trying to do a lot more – could use a little more focus. Mostly if the drumkit was more traditionally “metal” it would have fit the rest of the symphonic metal vibe that this was giving off for a majority. If the kick in particular had a little bit more attack and scooped sound with plenty of 4-8k click we’d be in buzzzzziness. Performances were rad and I love the arrangement.

Game(s): Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi
This track was nice in concept. I don’t know the source but I love it. It would have been nice if it was maybe a little slower. The bass could have used some more low end and the synth was a little too static in the performance and stuck out a little bit more than I think would be appropriate for what i think you were looking to go for.
Silent Tears
Game(s): Last Window: The Secret of Cape West
The acoustics are really well recorded and the performances are so spot on it’s crazy. I only wish that the “rock” / metal section was —- maybe a little more present with some low end. The bass tone is missing it’s name!! GIVE ME MY 80HZ ANON!

This is texture the song! I was bobbing my head the whole way through. If I had to give some specific critique – I think the soundscape is a little too open – needs some more low-low mids to really get it PUMPIN. The arrangement and vocal chops are so nice though

This is just banger solo after banger solo. That bass solo was insane. I don’t think it had to be lowpassed quite as hard as you had it even though that’s kind of the style. I love it otherwise. The drum intro was so sick too. I feel like I’m vibing in some college showcase rn. Nice shit.

This source is so good. The synth work is really good!!! I’m concerned about your vocal approach – if you’re going to go serious – go serious and make sure that your rhythms are super tight. Especially with EDM rap. I think the lyrics can work but your choices on the performance were a lot looser than I would expect.

This is such a calming vibe – groove is very precise. The drums have some… saturation?…? that is very weird for this to me. The guitar tone and performances are so good. Your musical vocabulary is great on the solos too anon – lots of nice modal shifts.

This standup bass is really good. The arrangement is really nice. I’m confused about the drumkit player. It feels like he was a last minute sub who got up to play with your group in a cafe because your drummer couldn’t make it. Everything else sounds like it’s holding it together very nicely.
Masque Des Miracles
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
This one makes me feel like i’m in a cafe sipping some french press and enjoying a baguette. I kind of wish the drums were a little bit more present – but otherwise the performances are so good and the arrangement seems super logical. The peak at 2:00 doesn’t quite hit – I think maybe due to a compressor? hard to tell.
Professor Latino
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
This is such a good recording and arrangement for this style. No pop extra compression or mixing. Just legit playing and separation. I can’t give good critique on this. Maybe this should have been played in my house instead of on a computer >:( Thanks anon!!

Mr Zappa Bungle???? God what a cool arrangment. Good performances too and I can tell you made an effort to make it not sequenced at all (hello breath on the sax part) – so cool. I can’t really critique this kind of thing very well. The production feels a — little static. Like the programmed drum do sort of detract from the overall. If this were a drummer they’d play along with the dynamics and tempo changes a lot more I think.

Game(s): 999: Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors
Some nice dark tones to open this one off, deep acoustic strums vs the soundscapes gives an ominous vibe. While I like some of the emphasis of the drum hits, it originally feels a bit too scattered and doesn’t help to give a consistent time flow. Nice dark, smoky tones from the female vocalist. Time gets a little more consistent about the 1:10 mark, but I feel like the vocalist is getting swallowed a bit by the instrumentals. Snare tone is a bit too echoey and deep for me, feel like for this something sharper would work a bit better. I notice the second growly vocals as the backing echo, but it’s pretty subdued, would like that to come up a bit more for a contrast. The one downside with the growly vocals taking over at the 3 minute mark is that it’s pretty hard for me to distinguish what the lyrics are. We really take off around the 4:20 mark, with the drums and guitars going into overdrive. That shift though then does drown out the growl vocals when they come back in, definitely could use a little more balancing here. I do like the transition into the ending segment – nice and clean to wrap this up. Overall, some issues with balance, but great start to the month!
apollo justice but it’s disco probably
Game(s): Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
Love the vibe on this one! Time feels slightly loose, which with disco you would expect some crispness. Is that some triangle in the background I detect? Not sure I’m feeling the drum groove – it definitely doesn’t have enough open/close hat variation to be considered disco in my mind, but the volume is balanced on it pretty well. I do like the guitar tone overall, it is very clean and balances well against the other backing instruments. Would like something more during the bridges when the guitar isn’t playing – would be nice to have one of the other voices take a bit of a turn to lead. Fadeout is very well handled. I think this is a really good base of an idea, would love to have seen this fleshed out and made a bit more complex

BLOOD
Game(s): Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Hitting right off the back with a nice organ sound and some really emphasized hits from the drums and the rhythm – very interesting mix between a prog feel and a bit of light metal. Then the bass comes in with that groove at about 0:50, and then we really take off. Drum pattern is very nice and complex, and helps to drive this song along. The metric modulations all over this are really fun – helps to keep me engaged. And then vocals! Backup vocals could come up a touch more but the lead vocal is really nice and balanced over the instrumentals. Shift around 2:40 is exquisite, really loving how complex and stylistic this arrangement is, even just a quarter of the way through. The bridge around 4:30 is just amazing, drummer gets to rock out and yet everything remains balanced. Then really mellowing out around 5:30 – gets us to take a nice calm break. Solo guitar tone is really beautiful, clean and can really just pick out that sound well. Then the buildup back to the previous section at 6:45 is really well handled. Would like a bit more of the backing vocals in this section, I can barely hear them and they get covered up by the instrumentals. Guitar solo just rises out and really shines in this closing section. I think only nit here is the ending feels a touch abrupt, would have liked a little more of a slow fade or something given how this piece went. But overall, this is rock solid anon(s)!
Rhapsody of the Forsaken
Game(s): Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Very heavy right off the bat. Would like a little more of the keys and a little less of the drums – given how consistent the drums are playing they feel a touch overbearing. Lead guitar can definitely come up more too, feels like the rhythm guitars are a bit louder than the lead. Overall this is a really fun arrangement, I love the vibe on it – just some different instrument balancing could really get this one to shine more

Game(s): Chrono Trigger
Very nice and smooth anon – good percussion to help drive the rhythm (shaker and tambourine I believe)? And despite the title, vocals are really well done and smooth. Piano is nice enough to help accentuate the time and the chords without being too in the way. Nice little addition of a floor tom or bodhran near the end, though it is a touch dead. Great work!
The End of Waging Raves
Game(s): Etrian Odyssey III
Time for the “why isn’t this a main”. Nice opening rhythm from the piano and the synths – before getting the guitar explosion. Drums rock out right away, and remain at the right point in the balance to not overpower. Synth melody line is very engaging, and hits right away. Like the slowed down drum rhythm at the second part, but could use a little more cymbal over the kick drum. Could use a little more of the guitar and bass in this first half, it does get swallowed up a little bit by the drums and the synth. Is this a synth or an EWI leading the second solo? Whatever it is, very technical solo, and then the drums get some nice fills to help shine through. Nice synth solos in the second half, trading off with the EWI/second voice. Trade off of the lead voices really helps to keep engagement on this track. Nice slow down and loosening up into the ending – felt very smooth. This really is a great track anon, great work on this!
Late Night Stroll
Game(s): Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
Very nice piano – bit of a skipping along feeling – with the cello and any other strings helping to give a nicer calmer backing voice. Really do get the title-like vibe of taking a nice stroll in a clear moonlit sky. Left hand arpeggios in the piano are nice and balanced, and the right hand twinkling melody does feel like it’s just skipping along. Cello gets to shine a bit more around the 1:30 mark, but would like to see even more melody given to the cello at some point. Overall, very beautiful and classically styled arrangement anon(s)!
Never Forget Her Name
Game(s): Fire Emblem Awakening
Get that Fire Emblem/JRPG intensity feel right out of the gate. Do feel like the drums are a bit too loud given the balance, and all the instruments feel a bit too quiet – especially the initial horn lines. Solo guitar and solo piano are much more balanced – but I do feel like even then the drums overpower a bit too much to get focus on the melody. Guitar tones are overall very clean. String section could get beefed up a bit too. The vibe shift around 2:40 is really well handled, but again feel like the brass/strings are getting swallowed up by the drums – I’m guessing those are all VSTs so maybe they aren’t balancing well against the live instruments? Going for the nice intense feel around 3:20 – really loving the overall rhythmic slowdown, before shifting into the quieter vibe led by the piano and the acoustic guitar. Balancing with the brass/strings does feel a bit better coming into the 2nd half of this piece, at least up until the feel change around 5:00. Then really coming home clutch with the nice quiet ending. Overall, I really loved a lot of this arrangement, but I feel like some balance issues mixing the rock band vs the more classical instruments (or VSTs) held it back a bit – with some balance changes I think this would be extremely solid

Damn, loving this reggae feel. Drums feel a little back in the mix, but I think with the vibe it’s going for that works decently well. Not sure if I quite love the synth tone for the lead, feel like I’d like something a little more mellower than this reed organ – feels a bit too sharp for a laid back feel. Bass is also a touch heavy I feel for this, the rhythmic pattern it’s taking is just right but the volume could be dialed back maybe just a touch. Not sure if the timbales are real or programmed, but they sound excellent. All in all, this is a really smooth and laid back arrangement anon – great job!
Silent Tears
Game(s): Last Window: The Secret of Cape West
Nice acoustic guitar to start this out, it’s very clean though a bit echoey to start, though this balances a bit as the 2nd acoustic guitar comes in with the rhythm. The soundscape in the background may be a touch overpowering – but at least is balanced with the multiple guitar voices. Drums feel really too far back in the mix – would like them brought a little more forward (though the initial rhythm with the fill felt a bit heavy). Honestly as the more electric instruments come in with the drums they all feel a bit distant – while I do like the emphasis on the solo instruments and the acoustic still, everything could come up and forward juuust a bit more. Very clean ending though to fade back to just the acoustic guitar. Great work anon!

Nice kinda pop-py feel to get this rolling off. Definitely enjoying the cowbells (or maybe actually temple blocks?) in the background, but they do feel a touch dead/muted (volume/feel would make more sense if they are temple blocks since they don’t ring as much). Vocals are a nice touch, but they feel pretty muted underneath the synth sounds. Nice clean guitar sounds, but again given it is a lead voice I feel it could come forward a bit more. Like the instrument driving around 2:30 or so, but between the lead instrument and the vocals it does start to feel a touch cluttered, not sure what I should be putting my focus into. Ending feels a touch abrupt too. Overall, a lot of great ideas in this one – just didn’t feel fully cohesive at times to me
The Wah’s Still Got It (and He’s Bringing the Mojo Back)
Game(s): Mario Kart DS
Yeah drum solo intro! The sound of it does feel a bit dull and really too far back, but the intensity and groove in there really helps to drive this opening – before the bass comes in. Actually, as everything comes in overall this arrangement feels like it’s just really in the back of the room mixing wise – gives a garage band sound but everything just feels a touch distant. I think I hear some triangle going in and accentuating the drums at times? Bass line is really grooving and moving – love a nice bass focus, though at this point the drums feel like they may be a little too much over the bass groove. Drummer is all over the place in a good way on this track – they are just grooving and really throwing some nice fills in. And that ending is spot on, love the chord just hanging as the drums drive through to the end. All in all, this is a slapping arrangement, and a really nice complement to the other MKDS track, just some minor balance tweaks to really kick this to the next level.

Dang, that is one punchy snare to get this off. This is a funky vibe right off the bat – really liking the tones chosen for all the instruments. Drums feel pretty nicely balanced here – they may be a touch too active but not enough that it’s distracting me away from everything. Tambourine adds a nice extra touch when it comes in. Tom fill is really nice, but I do feel like the drums during the solo feel a bit too muted. Overall, this is a great bop, really nice and funky fresh – great work!
War Never Changes
Game(s): Mega Man ZX
Intro is nice and poppy, but does feel a bit loose between the drums and guitar for the first 30 seconds or so. After that we lock in a bit as the other rhythm guitars come in. Vocals come through nice and clear – and are really well balanced over the instrumentals. Sometimes when the drums are just cymbals they are a bit too buried under everything else, but generally otherwise their balance is ok. Tone from the piano/synth is also really appropriate, nice and bubbly for this. All and all, this is a really fun journey anon(s), great job!
I Dream of Clapping (Three Minutes Clapping ReMIX)
Game(s): NEO: The World Ends with You
Fun EDM like vibe to start, very nice and synthy, and nice claps to help accentuate early. Drum beat is nice enough to help drive without being too complex. Vocals are appropriately balanced, but feel a touch too robotic (not sure if that is the true intention). The claps start to get a little repetitive as we go on, unless this is meant to be a performance of Steve Reich’s Clapping Music. It does help the rhythm on the claps get varied from time to time, but there could be some bigger gaps on when they are used vs when they aren’t. Second vocal entry feels off, it almost feels like the vocalist is shouting while still being robotic – not sure what the intention is here but it just feels off for some reason. Generally the rest of the EDM feels balanced though, though sometimes it just feels “there” without really adding too much complexity. There are a lot of fun ideas in this one, and I really like the stab at the complexity here, I think just some ideas needed to be solidified to help make this more cohesive.

Nice calm and click groove for the drums, balanced against the flowing rhythm guitar. Tambourine helps to enhance some of the strong beats from the drums, and the toms are pretty well balanced too – they speak well. Acoustic guitar comes through nicely as the solo line, very good vibes – but it does feel a bit muffled at time. Nice solo guitar break at 1:35 or so, really like how everything just cuts out. As the drums do come back in they feel a touch too echoey – the rims are really a bit too pronounced and covers up the bass line a touch. Nice bass riff up to end this. A lot of good ideas and a really chill vibe here, some of the balancing distracted me a bit but overall nice groove anon.
A True Gentleman Leaves No Puzzle Unsolved
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Feels like this does start on an off beat, so timing for the first 30 seconds or so feels a bit off until the violin solo comes in. Initial balance feels good against the piano, bass voice (bassoon?, and violin). I think the percussion balance is really off unfortunately – the drumset feels waaaay too back in the mix, and the toms don’t feel super balanced (could use some sort of mid level pass). The bass voice (cajon I believe) – and triangle are definitely a bit too saturated, I think some of the rhythmic inconsistency may be coming from having the cajon too forward and the drums a bit too far back. Accordion solo feels nice, but maybe a touch rhythmically loose. It does feel like everything in this arrangement is live, which is a really nice touch. In general some of the solo instruments can definitely come up (violin and accordion), and probably the drumset a bit too, and the rest of the percussion should be dialed back. Flute also really comes in well, and speaks at a good volume. Saxophone also is nice and balanced, and leads a good line – sax and flute interplay is balanced well. Drums do feel a bit better against the saxophone and flute – and also feel a bit better when the cajon isn’t in. The piano feels a bit halting in a few places as well – so while the drums keep moving the halting is a bit noticed. Flute coming in during the ending solo could be buffed up a bit too, feels a bit buried at that point under some of the other moving parts. All in all – given everything feels live here this is a really well thought out arrangement! I like a lot of the ideas in here, I think just definitely balancing the drums and percussion would help a lot, and making sure the solo voices always remain up at the top will help tons.
Masque Des Miracles
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Nice piano and shaker to kick this one off, as well as some nice mark tree to accentuate (but does feel like it hangs on a bit). And two accordions in a row, this is becoming accordion month! Drums are nice and grooving in the background, since they get help from the shakers to drive time a bit. Are those timbales coming in near the 2 minute mark? Sound nice and crisp there. Getting some nice tradeoff in this section between the accordion and the violin here, and then getting some electric piano after that to really take a fun twist (though the solo does start feeling a touch out of time). Very nice and clean ending, great job anon!

Game(s): Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Nice opening! Brass chord being accentuated by the wind chimes and slow cymbal hits – before the sax gets to take that nice initial melody line. Really nice interplay with the other saxophones as they come in, and drums are nice and lightly balanced. Then brass and claves and piano help to really drive that latin rhythm through, as the bongos, shaker, and guiro? come in with the lead trumpet. Very well handled tradeoffs between the trumpet and the sax in the next section, before the percussion and piano come in to take a turn to lead. Bass getting a turn to lead is also pretty exqusitie, and really loving the percussion break! I would have loved to play on this track anon (since I have all these instruments). This track really takes it home – great job anon(s) this is a beauty

Oooh, nice woodwindy action. Clarinet and bass clarinet really have a nice balance, and the castanet or clave helps to really drive the rhythm and the beat here. Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
This gives you that nice village feeling, with the shakers, guitar, and jaw harp – feels like we may be at a campfire telling a story. Guitars are really plucky, which almost gives it a nice percussive like feel. It does feel like the track as a whole may be a bit loud – but at least everything is balanced. Then the flute comes in, along with the guitars going to a more stomp like rhythm, which helps give the flute to shine as it kind of beat-boxes almost a bit. Then damn that guitar comes in with a nice riff, that is one skilled guitarist. Tone is very clean too. Only nitpick is the ending feels a biiiit to abrupt. But very innovative arrangement!
Spirit Guide
Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Nice soundscapes to start this off, before the flute comes in with the melody. Flute pops out nicely against the electronica as we enter this first section. Strings and piano could bear to come up a bit though. Nice few seconds of the lo-fi really help to grab the attention of the listener. Piano/music box/glockenspiel sounds is really nice, so is the backing triangle and wind chimes that come in around 2:00 or so. Nice string quartet ending helps to bring this into a quiet and calm finish. All in all, great arrangement, flute playing is really exquisite on this track.

Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Wooow big longie here. The intro feels a bit discombobulated – I’m guessing its intentional the sax feels out of time, if not then there just really is some disconnect between the guitar, drums, and sax to start this out. It’s distracting enough it’s really hard to get into an initial groove. After the break, then at 1:35 it starts to come together a bit more. Drums giving the more consistent beat help to identify the time, and a groove really settles in. Drums are nice and balanced, helping to drive and not overpower, but guitar and saxes may be able to come up a touch more here. Ok this one is going to become a prog adventure for sure, that metric modulation around 2:10 helps drive into the next section. The cymbals here do feel a bit too washy with the open hi-hat, but at least the groove is more consistent to really help drive consistency. Sax solo is really nice, but could come up a bit more since it is in the lower register. Time does feel a bit off again around 3:30 or so, but then re-establishes as we get heavier around the 3:50 mark, as we start getting an nice buildup in the sax and the bass voice, as we really start to get more proggy around 4:45 or so, then we hurry up and bit as well. Really nice dark tones with the bass and the slower drum rhythms for a bit, before the electric guitar comes in and it starts to get a bit busier. Guitar solo is really nice and clean, and balances well as it fades out and the sax comes back in. Unfortunately again feels like the saxophone is getting swallowed up by all the electric instruments. Really gets proggy again around 6:30 – not sure what instrument is driving the rhythm part but it sounds really interesting – as we get some of the lost woods themes popping in and out here in fragments. Really complex rhythms going in the later section that helps drive forward, but it is harder to pick out exactly what the melody should be there – just feels more like proggy rhythm grooving with not much to glue it together. Starts to come back together with some form of a melody being reintroduced around 8:40. Nice intensity building towards the end, really helps to punctuate the drive home on this piece. Overall, there are a lot of nice ideas in this one, but I feel like also a lot of balance and execution issues that kind of pull this piece back a bit, especially given the multiple ideas and the length of this one. A lot of innovation, but I think too many things competing that prevent this from being fully cohesive

Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes
Nice guitar duo to start this off – feels nice and airy. The rhythm has a bit of reverb on it to start, but feels more balanced as the lead comes in pretty quickly. Nice strings backing coming in, helps to give that low bass rumble as the guitars continue. Piano brings a nice contrast, the tone for the electric helps to blend in. Tambourine helps to give a nice little pop of rhythm, though the attack on it may just be a bit too heavy. It probably could also come in and out for a few verses, it being pretty continuous does feel a bit too much. Love the ending with everything just dropping out except the guitars to hammer home the initial vibe. Overall, this is a nice, smooth entry and really enjoy how flowing it is – very cohesive and calming. Great job anon(s)!
Music Box Memento
Game(s): Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
Nice sound effect to give the effect of a winding music box. The tone from the synth does really make it sound like it is a music box playing. Nice calm melody against a simple bass helps to promote that feel. Nice slow down effect to emphasize the winding down of the music box. Very fun anon!

Game(s): eCrew Development Program
Love the initial vibe, bass has a great old school tone, and the drums are decently balanced, but not much variation to help drive this. Very nice classical tone from the vocalist – you can tell they have really great power. Very beautifully balanced to show that the vocals are the centerpiece of this. The backing drums and instruments are perfectly balanced for this, but they do get pretty stale – would love having some more variations from the piano and bass, and getting some fills from the drums in the transitions. The vocal lyrics are also very entertaining, great thought behind them anon! Nice little slow down before driving into the end. Overall this was really great, just would love more changeups in the patterns of the instruments to help drive a little more engagement and attention

Ok, now the actual backing track to the evilsonic/Ian skit! This is actually very nice and calming, the reed tone is very good at poking through (maybe too much), and the synth and bass are very well balanced. And I know it’s the game but the constant McDonalds references are a nice little throw out for a laugh. Very fun!

This is going to be a metal banger, isn’t it? The intro leads up to that expectation, as well as those really nicely done low lyrics. I liked the female vocal delivery the most, but other standouts include the scream vox around 5m in, and the nice clear distorted guitar at about 4:40 or so. This is good music.
apollo justice but it’s disco probably
Game(s): Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
This one has a funky vibe to me, resembles disco but yet kinda more funk than disco. The playing is nice and clean and precise. I feel that the reverb on the lead is a little too much and that the backing disco elements are a bit too quiet. It might be good to have a sense of a different lead sound as well to trade off on the lead melody. The performance is solid and catchy.

Progressive rock that suddenly… VOCALS! The vocals are pretty good, great placement and the backing track illustrates a lot of attention to detail. I did NOT expect vocals in this one. The second section at 2:47 I wished was a little more pingy, but that’s a pretty minor nitpick because everything else is great. I liked the Vampire hunter callout (not sure if that’s in the original), the vocal tone and the guitar performances (like the whole middle soft section). I kinda wanted the last movement (around 7m) to be more intense and climactic, voice-wise, especially after such a big ride leading to this point! What a show this one is. Awesome stuff.

Game(s): Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
It’s nice to hear soft and gentle themes. This one is pretty lo-fi, we got some pretty strong high cut on the piano. I think this is intentional to make it sound kind of “old” (though I don’t get the feeling that the cello has the same high cut). The song’s a bit whimsical, but also melancholy. Really nicely arranged!

Game(s): Fire Emblem Awakening
Nice clean introduction! There’s a lot of trading off here – from guitar to trumpet to piano to strings. I really like that trumpet, actually. It’s like not quite in the front but it’s present and really adds to things. The mixing of almost everything close to front-and-center is a bit unexpected considering how many instruments, and I’d consider if maybe you want to give them a sense of being in a room. Everything is clear and separated and, best of all, quite dramatic!

This one starts fire (and loudly too!). I like the goofiness, the tempo, the sound effects, the groove. I wish the goofy sound effects weren’t so centered all on the back-right and had more placement in different places. The solo is fire. The lead synth is a good sound. The middle break was curious to me, I was almost like “is this a different song now?” and I felt like it lost some momentum, but overall this was a groove!!!

Really great vocal delivery. Vocal placement is good, the vocal mixing is good, like how do you get such perfect stereo separation on them? Those high sections, like what! The backing track does a good job of complimenting everything here. That solo was just what I needed, too. Singer just does it all in this one.

Nice chill song. It’s like almost bossa but yet kinda not. I like the looseness of the tempo actually – gives this one an honest and intimate feeling. I feel like the guitars needed a bit more separation in the mix and the drum needed slightly less reverb. Good variety in the solos.

Good upright bass, good violin, good triangle, was this all recorded live? Has that live feeling to it. Arrangement-wise, it probably could be a little tighter, with fewer repeated sections and less bouncing between players. You got some really good performers doing stuff in this one – especially that violin and that flute!

Accordion lines mixing together. I like the call and response lines, the breaks, and the repeated background that increase and increase the tension until you let it all go in some nice solo. There are some really great musical conversations between the instruments.

Game(s): Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Some good trumpet playing and nice Latin rhythms. This one has a good “live band” feel, but it is more focused on the wind instruments, which are all played really solidly! The trumpet and sax are both really good in this one. I like how this one pays particular focus on key instruments throughout and really lets them shine. Wait, I recognize that riff…

Real whistling and throat singing makes this one really stand out. The whistle playing is cool. That acoustic guitar solo is really wild! The mixing is a bit louder than I’d expect for this style. Overall, this was super interesting, glad I got to hear it.

It’s an EDM song mixed with some really pleasant live instruments. The dubstep FM bass behind synth flutes is an interesting decision – I’m wishing the bass was a bit more present (or, alternatively, less wobbly), since here the lead instruments really want to draw attention and they’re well-played. These strings are good too. The exchange between the different lead instruments is great. I think the drums want to hit a bit harder.

This is a bit of a trip. Repeated live sax loop (heh, the breath means that you know it’s real, right?) and strange developments and all of that. It takes a moment to get used to it (in this context) but I buckled myself in so I’m down for it. Like the noodly sax is actually quite pleasant. The backing bass is kinda like… what is going on here! but it’s serving the purpose. My mind is spinning, my heart is racing. It is a bit long, maybe? Thanks for serving us up something different, I enjoy hearing strange concepts for music.

Really pretty and melancholic opening. The playing is good, and the song is gentle and intimate. It sounds like a synth bass (is it?) but I feel going all acoustic would suit the vibe better overall. I kind of wanted the notes on the lead guitar to ring out a bit more too, since that lead melody is so pretty. Really nicely done.

I love this scary monster voice genre personally 😀 This is right up my alley – arrangement is brooding and thoughtfully crafted, there’s a great sense of escalation as the song goes on. The guitar tones are excellent and I really love the vocal performances as well. The drum mix is a weak link here, they’re just too quiet compared to everything else in a way that doesn’t feel intentional as a genre convention. The vocals also feel mixed quietly. I rated this one highly, it gets more right than it misses the mark on, but I would love to hear the drum mix improved.

Game(s): Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
Super vibey lead guitar tone, love it. That’s definitely the hook of the track for me. I didn’t walk away from this with very many specific comments, which I suppose is a testament to your ability to capture a vibe and lock into it. It’s a vibe that I happen to enjoy, so it works for me even though it doesn’t end up being terribly flashy. The fadeout didn’t really work for me in execution either, it felt like the volume is fading out and the instruments are ALSO winding down at the same time. Not a huge deal overall, this is a good one.

Game(s): Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Damnn, this is a strong contender early on in the batch. The arrangement feels somewhat detached between the two parts, but I’m not as well-versed in prog rock arrangement conventions so that could very well be a stylistic thing. The mix is clean as hell without taking the bite out of the song. I felt like the drum tone didn’t totally hit the mark for me, but the performance/writing is excellent! That organ tone chef’s kiss and I do love the acoustic breakdown in a vacuum – I feel like I would have been satisfied if the arrangement just faded out during the acoustic breakdown, the final minute and a half felt like it was going for an extended outro similar to Lune by Periphery, but there wasn’t a lot of lush chords or harmonic support to really give it that cinematic outro feeling, so it felt like padding to me. The ending solo rips though. This has the benefit of me being very familiar with the source tune, I’ve spent a lot of time playing Dawn of Sorrow so all of the lyrical references landed for me. They’re a bit tongue in-cheek (you really hit us with the “That’s the name of the show!” in the middle) but the delivery on the vocals for both the clean and growling vocals is very strong and controlled. Lots of subjective feelings here, but overall loved this one a ton! This is going to be tough to beat, anon!

Game(s): Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
This is rad as hell – the piano adds so much richness to the mix. Cammycakes called out a Motoi Sakuraba comparison and I totally agree with that! Feels like something out of an official OST or arrange album. My lack of commentary should in no way suggest that I didn’t love this, especially given my familiarity with the source!
Late Night Stroll
Game(s): Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
This is quite nice! Feels like an official soundtrack piece, which seems to apply to a lot of songs this month. I felt like it went on a little long at the same dynamic level to really keep my interest in this type of competition, but that’s not a knock on you – you clearly knew what you were doing with this arrangement.
Never Forget Her Name
Game(s): Fire Emblem Awakening
There’s so much variety in this arrangement – this is how you do a 6 minute long arrangement that takes its time and savors the moment, but doesn’t waste any of that runtime either. The dynamics are incredible, really solid rhythm and lead guitar performances here too, and the piano comes in at just the right time. My only beef with this is the fidelity of the strings. The trumpet tone is fine even though I suspect it might be sampled, but the strings have a very synthetic quality to them that feels immersion breaking. If you need string VST programming done after the compo is over, hit me up! 🙂

Cool vibe here, though it doesn’t really progress to as many places as I would have liked. It functions well as background/OST music to set a vibe, so outside of the context of a competition, this would certainly work well. The lofi production style works really well and feels intentional, rather than any shortcoming in production quality. I’d love to see a more ambitious arrangement for future entries, but this is good stuff!

LOVE THIS! Very vaporwavey, some sort of “wave” genre anyway. To Seph’s comment about the vocals, I didn’t feel like they were TRYING to be super audible, they felt more like chops/accents that may have been custom-made for this track, but that was a highlight for me. Overall very vibey and well-produced for the style.

I really admire the approach here, and I want to like this a lot! It’s ambitious and clearly full of heart, but the vocal performance are not meeting the moment yet. Seph had some great feedback on how to improve the vocal performance so that it feels more confident and locked in, and I cosign that 100%. This has a ton of potential and I love hearing these sort of unconventional approaches in this competition, even if the execution didn’t land with me.

Game(s): Pokémon Diamond & Pearl
Perfect source for this kind of treatment <3 It feels like a warm cup of tea on a perfect spring morning. I felt like the lead guitar tone had room for some more spice to it, and a bit more expression in the performance itself. I wasn’t as in love with the drums as some of the other reviewers, they’re a little up-front and showy both in the mix and writing in a way that pulls me out of the blissed-out vibe of the guitars/bass, and the saturation that Cyril picked up on is something that also feels a little off for me. Can’t quite put my finger on it. That’s a lot of criticisms of the mix but honestly I really enjoyed this 🙂
A True Gentleman Leaves No Puzzle Unsolved
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Curious Village
This has so much potential, but definitely feels like a demo mix with some scratch takes. The violins, flute, and bass feel locked in, but the drum groove is too detached from what’s going on around it. I understand what you were going for, and I like the idea of adding some flourish and flair to the drum performance, but there’s not enough consistency to lock me into a groove. The aux percussion sits great in the mix, though! The melodica/accordion brings a great tone to the ensemble but unfortunately feels very sloppy in the performance, which is also compounded by the lack of a consistent groove when it IS playing. Conceptually, there’s a lot to love here, but it doesn’t have the level of polish I would hope for from a finished product yet!

Seph called the Clair Obscur vibes and I agree HARD with that. REALLY tight performances and backing instrumentation, this is stunning y’all. I have no criticisms at all, every one of you (assuming this isn’t just one stupidly talented person pulling this all out of a hat) did your thing <3 I want to go to whatever cafe this is being played at. Hard to see this one not medaling this month.

Game(s): Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Unreal hearing this back to back with the other Layton tracks, there’s a whole mini-EP of Layton arrangements that fit so well together, even though they each bring their own flair to the mix. This is stunningly recorded, mixed, and performed. Love all the little cameos on the sax solo, I see you, you cheeky bastard 😉 If I had to nitpick anything, it’s that the piano feels dull in the mix, it feels like the writing wants to bring a little more energy than it ultimately does. There’s also a couple of moments, such as 3:08, where the lack of low-end punch in the drums makes the big synced hits not have quite the impact it feels like you wanted it to. Ultimately though, this is a fantastic track that deserves every bit of love it’s getting.

The instrumentation here is SO good, it fits great with the Layton block that came before it. I feel like you mixed this one a bit aggressively, the intro feels like it’s pumping a bit from overcompression and you’re getting some crunch. As a showcase of different instruments though, this brings an incredible level of variety to the table and is a joy to listen to!

Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Really cool use of what seem like a few different flutes here! The textural elements are well-developed although the mix is definitely a little uneven – it sounds like it’s approaching what I’d expect from the UK Garage/chillstep genre but didn’t quite stick the landing on the mixdown in terms of drum/bass balance, and the flute definitely feels drowning in reverb. I think this needs a little more pre-delay so it retains the sense of ambient space without feeling literally drowned out. The actual songwriting feels great but some of the transitions are not totally smooth. Still a cool style that I haven’t heard on DoD before!

The intro almost lost me here, but I’m glad I stuck with it, because this track goes places. I would have trimmed up the intro significantly but I can also tell that this style is not my bread and butter, so you were probably going for something specific here. Once the rest of the instrumentation came in, I found myself enjoying all the creative ideas you brought to the table. I’m curious what source you were arranging here, I’d love to hear the story behind this one once votes are revealed. Bold and unapologetic, I love that you full-sent this, even if I’m not exactly the target audience.

The rhythm guitars aren’t really doing it for me here for reasons brought up by other reviewers, but the lead is gorgeous, expressive, and more than enough to keep me hooked! There’s a lot of little flourishes that are gradually introduced as the track unfolds.

So I dig. It works well for the style. The biggest thing I would focus on is drum mixing and programming in the future. Even just some more smaller fills, or better fills, along with some additional love to the drum production can go a LONG way. I would also suggest looking into what can be done to improve vocal clarity; some of it might come at the source recording instead of mixing; growling is hard. I get that the style is not complete clarity, but when dealing with vocals, on average it’s better to have as much clarity as possible. Still, this is one hell of a cool entry! I definitely love stoner/funeral/etc doom. Good stuff!

I’ve been headboppin! I think the drums/bass need more love. I know the temptation to put the lead instruments high, but here’s a method to try: Solo your drums, get them sounding as good as possible. Maybe put them peaking at -6 DB (just an example, adjust to taste – just don’t have em peaking at 0 db). Get your bass sounding as good as possible, put it peaking at -6 db and get that groove locked. Edit one/both peaks to be lower if needed. Once that feels good, that’s like 80% of your mix work. Adjust the lead back into taste – if there’s not enough groove, you need more bass/drums back in. If there’s not enough melody, you need more lead back in. Just a suggestion of a method that may work for you. I’ve found a lot of benefits lately by going Drums -> Bass -> Leads -> Rest in my own process. This still got me headbopping!

HOLY MOLY. Okay, so, for vocals, I think more reverb would be good to blend in with the instrumentals (but not too much), but also, listen to some of your favorite tracks and focus on JUST the vocals. Better yet: Grab some stems! Some creative automation with delays/reverb/chorus/etc can go a long way. Experiment around with it and have fun! Getting to do that at the end of phrasings and especially sections can go a long way. Some of the transitions could’ve been smoother, but man. one hell of a track. feels like I just went on a journey. Good stuff Anon(s)!

balancing issues are the biggest thing I’d focus on – I know audible drums are good, but the bass/leads may have lost out a bit compared to the drums/rhythm guitar. Keys might be better off sitting in a different space. I don’t know how you have them at the moment, but being a little more aggressive on panning may be worth trying? I’ve been personally playing more with the stereo field since I add Too Much to my tracks lately. Still, this is sick. I’m all here for the Metalvania block.

Oh man this is beautiful. I know too dry is often a complaint of mine, but maybe taming the reverb a bit more and/or a little less reverb would’ve done good? Sometimes it feels like the piano was a bit overshadowed by other instruments going on. Though I’m not familiar with the source.

Oh man I love the source track. The biggest thing I’d focus on, if you revisit this, is getting the leads more tamed so that they feel more cohesive. Automation may help with that. Crank that shit up to -6 LUFS (or whatever LUFS is suitable). Basically, get the volume going and level the leads together and you’ve got yourself one hell of a banger.

I know there’s focus on the feedback on lo-fi and some of the timing hits, but I think it might do a lot of good to play with sound selection. I’ve been bad at this for YEARS, but like, find five presents you like the most that fit the reggae vibe. Then pick between them. Keep doing that for the next instruments as you test them with what you’ve already selected. It’s kinda all about experimenting and adjusting to taste (and reference tracks). Also, play with some of the transitions – the transition at 1:23 feels like a ‘we’re ending the song’ transition, not a ‘we’re moving onto the next section’ transition. Also, at the end, I think one note comes across as the VST still playing. Minor nitpick, I know. love me a good Reggae still. Hope to hear more Reggae from you in the future!

The acoustic mix over here is AWESOME! Once the electric instruments hit in it gets to be a bit distant. I’ve had difficulty with changing tones in my songs, but there are options (and many of them) to remedy this): You could make the rock section all electric, thus making the acoustic guitars stand out more. Automation could also fix this. Either way, I’d try muting all the acoustic instruments first, get the electric instruments sitting right, then bring the acoustic ones back in.

what in the vaporwave is this? I think it could’ve been pushed up a lil louder, but the biggest thing I’m thinking is that it could’ve used more low end in the bass. Bass gets a little buried and feels a little wide(?) with all the chaos going on. definitely can’t say I’ve heard anything like this on DoD before. Not for everyone, but I dug it.

When dealing with live drums, I think processing is doubly important. The performances are really great, and the arrangement’s solid. I think just going back and revisiting the mix would be good. Like the bass solo is AWESOME, but it gets drowned out by the organ keys. I think there’s a couple of mix breakdowns on DoD? Including one PuD did of one of my tracks before? Still, please keep subbing. These performances and the arrangement are sick.

i’m headbanging in my chair, aw yeah. Drums are a little too low at the solo/other parts, especially compared to the rest, and the leads could’ve been punched up a tad higher on most of the track/given more room (Whatever way you choose to do that, e.g., being louder, duplicate track with more width, etc). But wow. What a headbanger. I’d LOVE a production breakdown of this!

I see what you’re trying to do with the intro, but it feels a bit disjointed; either polish it up and make it run for longer, or just scrapping could both be viable options. guitars are a bit too loud compared to the vocals. I also think the transition at 3:10 could’ve used a little more oomf. But man, the performances kick BUTT here. Lot of love in this one. Good stuff Anon.

Okay first Anon, I love your voice and I dig the vibe of this track.. I know people are on about the vocal performances, but I think the main drums/bass could use a little bit more clean up here. There’s stuff piling on in the low end. It’s like, I want to bounce on it more, but the body is just not there. I’ve went through polishing my drums/bass in synthwave for years and it’s still like 80% of the work. So if you revisit this: solo drums, get them pumping drums pumping. Unmute the bass, mix them together, then get another vocal performance in that’s more confident (don’t be afraid of more small and subtle vocal layers) and you’ll have even more of a banging track on your hands.

Drums could use some improvement in programming. Beyond that, I think it’s good to try and add more separation on the guitars in terms of tone. Some more tightness could be used on the performance – That said, I love the chill vibe and I love the groove. You definitely know your way around a guitar – loved the acoustic and clean tones used here!

okay so I don’t think the drums are bad (though they could’ve used more mixing work on them), but they feel wildly unfitting from what everyone else is playing. Really, if you can do a redub on the drums, and remix them to fit the rest of the track (like, notch that triangle for sure, it’s a lil too pokey) this track would shine HARD. I know how hard that would be to do if everything is live. I’m definitely still bopping my feet, like, the rest of these performances really hit.
Masque Des Miracles
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
I think there could’ve been a little more carving in-between parts to make them each stand out more and a little more variation in the drum playing. I also do feel like the drums are a little too intense(?) at times when they could be more chill, especially to contrast the more intense parts, but this is like, nitpicks of nitpicks. This is FANTASTIC. Especially the Piano and Accordion processing. Definitely curious to hear how you went about that, Anon(s). All of the performances really good Good stuff!

I could go on a bunch of mixing/other crits, but I think it’s better to start at the source: While I dig the arrangement, I think losing your listeners can be a fear. The best prog tracks aren’t good because they’re complicated, they’re good because the complication serves the track itself. There’s a LOT of great prog ideas here, but they feel more like doing 30 second snippets instead of telling a story. I get that I may not be the target audience for this, and I get that I’m also a bit “SIMPLIFY” as a producer, but just a bit of reigning it in can go a long way. Also absolutely love the section at 7:00. Seriously, a ton of nice ideas here. Hats off to the performer(s) for pulling this one off. edit: pretty much +1 to everything TheManPF said.

Focusing on guitar the guitars: I would work on the rhythm guitars (fix whatever phasing/etc you have going on in there, clean-up the reverb, etc) and giving the lead guitar a little more reverb. The issue with the lead guitar is it doesn’t ring out as much as it would in another room right now. The ending really shows; Even a little more reverb can make the already abrupt ending a little less awkward. I love how calming this is still, Anon. Seriously would love to see more like this. Wonder what a Violin would sound like in the fray.

This is such a fascinating selection of instruments and they mesh together really well. The playing is also really tight. Also I do feel this could be a little longer 😁

Nice growls! I like how they’re under the main vocal. Reminds me the of early 2000’s! Like Flyleaf or Lacuna Coil. Everything is pretty clear but sounds little lopsided on the high end. I say this every time I review: I am picky about electric guitar lead tones. I think the clean arpeggios feel a little too fat, I would like some sparkle on them. And the distorted lead feels shallow – it would benefit from some mids and taking the highs down a tad. Oh, actually I do like how the EG leads sound at 5:30 as they harmonize. Very cool!

Nice vibe right off the bat. Lead playing feels a little out-of-time in the beginning. The acoustic guitar also has some high frequencies poking out. Or is that a sitar? A synth? I hear it panning around. It’s cool but very pokey. I feel the arrangement has a similar energy level throughout and would benefit from some dynamic shifts. Varying up the main drum beat would help as well.

Pick scrape = sick. Love it. Rhythm guitars feeling a little thin. Actually the whole mix would benefit from some mids imo. Nice 7/8 riff. The organ feels a little dry. Some reverb would help here. Oh, vocals? Sweet. Right in front, where they need to be. Love the growls underneath. OH that growl into pinch harmonic was SICK. Nice glitch at 5:20. Break at 5:40 is welcome, especially for such a long track. I reiterate the need for mids here, it’s very bright. Nice main theme reference at 6:30. Love the vocal harmonies. And we’re going out with a guitar solo! Nice. This track is an adventure for sure. Nice and heavy, proggy, I dig it. Cool arrangement! Balance the mix for a truly epic track.

HAWK SCREEEEEEECH! (I learned recently that the hawk, not the eagle, actually makes this sound, despite what TV would have us believe!) I dig the drum sound for this. I don’t think I would like it everywhere but for this track it fits really well. Rock band is mixed well imo. I like the string mix in this actually, I feel it’s where it needs to be to be audible if I focus on it but not competing for attention. Contrast that with the trumpet on the right channel which does ask me to pay attention to it sometimes when a different lead instrument is playing. The arrangement is sick and goes everywhere all the time. But not in a bad way! There are leitmotifs that provide the through line throughout all the changes. And the section changes feel excellent.

Cool vibe. Overall track is a bit quiet and the mix is muddy. I think there are lots of details that get missed as a result. The synth swells are nice. The flute synth is the lead instrument throughout the track and I wish other instruments got a turn. Combined with the chords constantly on the backbeat, it makes the track feel same-y. Same with the fadeout – doing any kind of ending would add some variety to the second loop of the main idea. Cool sounds, nice and simple arrangement. I enjoyed it, and with some attention to the mix and some variety this will be a very cool track.

Beautiful start. The guitars sound excellent. Pads coming in add a great texture. Also with the tremolo picking + panning. Mood change at 1:50! Nice payoff, though I feel the electric guitars start hogging all the frequency space making everything else “duck”, resulting in a muddy mix overall. Be sure to cut the lows and find places in the EG frequencies for other instruments.

Cool vibe! I am curious what’s live here. Oh, there’s an EG around one minute! Nevermind. If I’m meant to hear the words from the vocal (samples?), I cannot. They need some clarity added and mud subtracted. Take out low mids and add some 3-5k if that’s your goal. Alright I know this is a genre thing, but I do not like hearing fake record pops. They are distracting. Sorry anon. XD I feel the drum pattern is same throughout much of the track so it feels unvaried to me. Cool soundscape though!

A drum intro? Interesting! It sounds far away, so I’m kind of expecting like a jazz club vibe. And as the other instruments come in, it does feel kind of like that! I think the keys sound a little dry compared to the drums. Other parts like the clean guitar solo fit better, though the guitar tone is very mid-heavy and could be balanced with the other instruments with more highs. Nice groove shift at 3:30. I like the trading lines between keys and guitar shortly after too!

I love this saturated snare sound. Please show me what you used. I want to hear the attack on the bass! Sounds great otherwise. Synth leads and organ are the highlight here! Great break around 1:10, love the bitcrushed drums. The bass feels really mid-heavy during the clap-and-drum break. It blends better when everything is going, but I feel actually it might benefit from a low-mid cut and finding another spot to compensate in the whole track. Sounds great when it comes back at 2:45! Oh dang, sick synth runs. Really showing off for us, eh? Ahhh, 2:45 transition out of the solo is excellent. Perfect. Groovy track anon. Thank you! WAH!

Interesting start! Vocals, nice! The words are difficult to make out. You have to cut out the low-mids and add clarity in the upper-mids, between 3-5k. Clap samples are cool but start to get repetitive after a while. Love the glitchy sections. Autotune! There’s not enough tactically deployed autotune in DoD, love this. Nearing the end, the overall energy in the track feels flat. There is a little bit of mud in the low-mids that would benefit from being cut. I also think individual instrument lines feel very MIDI, some humanization would help bring some life to this track, particularly if the velocities were varied with slight adjustments. Lastly, the repeating synth ostinato that starts in the intro is prevalent throughout the song, making it feel repetitive. Overall, the bones of a really solid track are here that some polish will help turn this into a real banger. Also, thanks for covering TWEWY!!

I feel like I’m relaxing on the beach, nice vibe. Mix is warm, sounds nice. I feel the guitar solo around 2:30 is a bit out of the key for this kind of track. It’s nicer at 1:45 when all the instruments drop out, it adds some nice variety to the track at this point. The bass solo at 2:10 is similar, it feels like there’s some out-of-key notes. There is some variety in the ‘backing track’ that is nice, as well, and helps keep the track from feeling too much like a guitar over a backing track. A fun, chill listen!

Off to a promising start with some nice cluster chords, violin, and tenor? sax. Bass is a little boomy when it comes in. Actually yeah, it’s quite boomy on the low notes as the track continues. Great trading leads though with the violin and accordionish instrument. I should really learn what all those types of instruments sound like haha. Triangle? Cool! Funky flute solo! Heck yeah! Castanets! Sure! Final comments, the mix for the non-bass instruments sounds pretty good to me. This sounds like it was recorded live! If so, impressive! But it could use some cleaning up. The triangle has a high pokey frequency. Great touch but gotta watch it on bell-like instruments. Lastly, the piano line repeats basically the whole track and starts to get repetitive at around 3 minutes. Some variation here would be nice.

Apparently this OST calls for accordion and violin? Haha. Very nice. Similar to the last one, the bass is feeling a little big, though not as boomy as the last one. Love how the low note sounds when it hits. Transition at 2:00 is sick. Piano solo into ePiano solo! Awesome. This whole solo section is great actually! Everyone just showing off, haha. And the trading is immaculate. As someone who loves solo battles, the moments they trade feels really creative and inspiring to me!

Most tracks, my review happens on the first listen. This is my second listen for this review so I’ll comment on the overall stuff. TBH I actually grew to enjoy this one more and more as it went on. Many of the ideas are really, really cool to listen to. Not all of them land for me, but more land than don’t! Love 4:38. The major section at 6:00 is really refreshing and super cool. 7:00 absolutely slaps. Unison run in the outro is insane. I want to drop a personal preference that I think is important in arranging: the first 90 seconds are the roughest part for me. It sounds like a bunch of lines trampling on each other, like a live sound check lol. Maybe this is exactly what you were going for, but something I try to do in my arrangements is hook listeners early and save the really weird stuff for later. That way it feels earned and listeners don’t check out early. Just my 2c! 🙂 Playing on this sounds insane for everyone involved. I hear some quotes in here which are really cool surprises, like the Majora’s Mask Astral Observatory at 5:00. N64 Lost Woods at 6:30. Lastly, a mix comment: The overheads sound like there’s a little too much room on them, like they’re in a different room than the rest of the mix. This is particularly obvious on the crash in the left channel. Same comment for the heavy rhythm guitars at 3:50, they sound like they’re in a different room. Overall really fascinating track. I enjoy novel ideas, weird rhythms, and virtuoso playing in music and this definitely ticked the box for me. Great job!

Groovy entry! Reminded me of that Yakuza entry for Rhythm Month. For a while there, it has an atmospheric break that feels a bit weird. Almost as if the guitar here had been recorded in one take and it needed to take a break, but I obviously can’t tell for sure. It’s also the longest fadeout I’ve heard in a while, which isn’t necessarily bad. But I think the arrangement could be tighter, if that makes any sense.

I had trouble recognizing this source at first, but it immediately screamed “Castlevania” from the intro (probably the organ). Bass is great, and as soon as that rhythm comes in, I knew I had heard this before. Love the shifts and turns this takes, and of course, the amazing vocals. I’m a fan, vocalist anon, your lyrics are way cool as well (that is, if you wrote them), love how you mention several games and tropes from the series. As mentioned during the LP, this has a lot of Dream Theater vibes. Proggy, heavy and very Castlevania. This is a longie, but in my opinion, it never overstays its welcome. In fact, the excellent acoustic break helps it reach that 7 minute milestone and, are those subtle winks to another and more classic source there? I do feel the vocals could use some more effects to give them an extra oomph at the right places. However, the chorus chant and tasteful guitar solo at the end really make the whole piece worth the while with a very emotional ending. You made my top anon.

I pegged this on a different anon at the listening party, but after relistening, the main arranger became clear. They deserve a medal just for getting this beast of a game (and soundtrack) into DoD. But the arrangement and performances are top notch as well. The love for the source is palpable, and this greatly improves on it. It’s not just a metal or prog arrangement, the trumpet and acoustic guitar specifically give it a more eclectic feeling. I like the added murmurs and sound effects, but I actually think the track could use more of that for dramatic effect. Specially the crowd noises could be a little more prominent, imo. Other than that, this is an amazing and melancholic entry, thank you anon!

This was probably the first DS game I ever played, so this hits close to home. I love this style of electronica. Maybe not so much the lofi treatment, but the distorted vocals remind me of Flume, an artist I’ve been revisiting lately. I like how the guitar was integrated, put it’s perhaps too sparse and hidden. I would have loved a guitar-driven segment in the middle to make this stand out more and make it more dramatic. As it is, it’s all vibes and atmosphere, which I still love.

The volume here was a bit low, but that might be attributed to the quality of the recording. Performances however, are out of this world! This type of live jazz ensemble full of improvisation and solos is exactly my jam, would love to see them play. All performers seem to really vibe with one another, and the music just flows in and out of the source. Not one bit feels out of place or boring. I don’t enjoy so much auto-tune at all, to be honest. But that’s a “me” problem, since this type of EDM is a thing out there. The backing track certainly gets too repetitive, and the vocal performance could use some work, but it sounds confident enough in this style.

Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
This one had a concept. Performances sound great to me, even if they are experimental and at times, dissonant. After all, I think that’s the point: to be as schizoid as possible. It keeps changing and turning into different genres as we go. However, the main motif was already getting tiresome when we reach the 5 minute mark. I believe making you uncomfortable was one of the objectives, but I better not assume anything about anon’s intentions. So I’ll say that this is easily 2 or 3 minutes longer than it needs to be, and that’s what prevented me from voting it higher.
Drink Water (hey look a river)
Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes
What a melancholic entry! I like that it’s not entirely acoustic, it adds to the atmosphere. Production might not be the best, but I enjoyed anon’s guitar performance. I had no idea this game had good (and emotional) music.
Shift’s Over!
Game(s): eCrew Development Program
This entry leans too much into alt territory for my taste. I would have preferred anon’s talents were applied to a more inspiring or substantial soundtrack for their main entry. But alas, we get this silly McDonalds anthem. 😅 This is an entirely biased take, since there is no rule against shitposting in mains. It’s just not something I usually endorse when voting. I do make exceptions, but I’ll try to justify those when the need arises.

Doom metal to open the month is rad af. Tasty riffage and great vocal across the board, both clean and harshies. Drum mix is lacking balance – overall too quiet for most of the piece. Kick is nice and clear, snare works for the mix but needs a couple dB boost, hats and overhead cymbals are much too quiet even for the style. Let them boombams loose!
apollo justice but it’s disco probably
Game(s): Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
ABBAllo Justice, hell yeah. Nails the disco vibe from the jump, even including the fadeout ending! Little loose on the guitar entrance, tightens up toward the chorus. Delay in the left ear around a minute in suffers a bit from the same looseness – rhythmic dissonance can be enjoyable but this style tends toward keeping things tight for that dance vibe.

Game(s): Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Beeg hits on that start. Sounds like an amped reed organ? A little goofy but it’s very CV-coded. Yoooooooo Demon Castle Pinnacle in 7/8?? And then 12/8?? Who hurt you, anon? 😭 Gang vocal af on the verses, cool groove. WHAT the chorus is the 7/8 bit… okay we get it anon, you like Pink Floyd and Opeth and King Crimson. Organ solo is neat, turns that other Demon Castle Pinnacle riff on its head. Hard cut to acoustic break, very Opeth. Sounds like A Fleeting Respite but in 6/8 – very prog, much time signature. Back to DCP with those weird stabs AND YOOOO FLEETING RESPITE OUTRO. Beeg whoas, like a power metal Gojira. Cool shit anon, take it easy with those time signature changes. You could put an eye out with them on the dance floor

Game(s): Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Bog Standard metal take on the track of the same title from the OST and not a damn thing wrong with that. Feels a little like Goldeneye with that delicious chord planing after the chorus riff. Mix is solid, would love to hear more of the attack on the bass guitar but it’s nice and tight with the kick drum which is more desirable. Love the harmonics on the riff on the outro!!
Late Night Stroll
Game(s): Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
Lovely little lo-fi piano and strings number. I can hear some room for rubato in these passages to help them feel less robotic, but what’s presented is still expressive. Careful with the attack on that celeste(?), 2:36-2:42 has some rhythmic dissonance on the tails of the notes that hurts the delivery on that outro. Great piece overall, anon!

Game(s): Fire Emblem Awakening
Lead guitar is a tad woofy for my taste but works well in the mix – especially with all the strings and horns fighting for that same mid space. Love the changeups to acoustic sections after the heroic metal bits. Holy fuck guitar solo at 3:16, love that shit! Double kick feels a bit anemic in the section at 4:32ish, could use some automation to bring it a little more forward. Great interpretation of the track overall, anon!!

Mmmmmm lofi raggae, hell yeah anon. Lead timing is a bit off around :38 – doesn’t quite catch the groove like the rest of the track. Really lean into those staccatos and take those melodic turns more hairpin – might need to tweak the synth settings to quicken the attack on those phrases specifically. That’s the only nitpick I have, performance and programming from the other instruments are solid and the vibe is on point. Great job, anon!

Game(s): Last Window: The Secret of Cape West
Relaxing acoustic guitar duet to start, love the rattle in the left ear from the strings. Ooooooh tremolo panned line is a nice touch. Lead guitar and drums sound like they’re playing in an entirely different room from the rest of the instruments, would love to hear them be more aligned with the rest of the band. Love the arrangement overall, anon!

Anon brought out the cowbells, yesssss! Vocal seems to be fighting for space against the synth lead, hard to make out the phrases. Mix feels like it’s asking for some compression to glue everything together – the low end and high end don’t feel like they’re making the groove breathe despite having the right flow. Good track, anon!

Game(s): NEO: The World Ends with You
There’s a charming, Napoleon Dynamite quality to this track that I can dig. The claps do get pretty tiring after the first minute – they’re thin to start and don’t really get beefy until the very end of the track. The vocals I’m pretty split about. The mixing on them is great – nice and upfront and crystal clear, but the performance needs work. Specifically for me, the delivery is the culprit: prosody feels forced and unnatural, and the timing on the second verse is shaky because of it. I don’t hate the hardtuned choruses, but I do think there is a smoother way to transition between those notes so it doesn’t sound like a faulty robotic preset. Look at ways to automate the attack dial on your VST, it’ll be worth the effort!

Cozy beach time with anon, aww yeeee. Hats sound like they’re lacking in velocity variation, makes the hits sound robotic even though the sequencing isn’t. Love the vocal performance! Could us a little fx on it, it’s a bit too clean for the rest of this mix. Maybe just back it off and raise the backers a tiny smidge? Looking at the timestamp I am worried this will wear out its welcome. The arrangement of this tune is really good, feels like the production could use a little more. Drums could benefit from a little bit more variance in the note velocities.

Great tone, great playing. Drums could benefit from a bit more variety; particularly in the setpiece around 1:45ish. Maybe turn up the instrument playing the B section melody a tiny bit? It’s hard to hear what it is at its current volume. Rest of the mix is excellent.

Love the contrast between the loud sections and quiet sections. Acoustic guitar sounds fantastic in the mix. Trumpet could be a bit louder. I feel like the guitar melody is a bit too plain for what came before it and after it. That may be an intentional choice, but it stuck out to me. The second time through it’s modified a fair amount and that feels better. Coming out of the guitar cadenza felt a tiny bit awkward, but I like the idea a lot. Drums sitting real good in the mix. Great way to end with the bass guitar.

Game(s): Professor Layton and the Curious Village
There’s some messy rhythms in this. The players are clearly excellent, a little bit tighter lining up in the mixing stage could help a lot. Kick drum way too loud in the mix for how much it’s playing (or is that a cajon?) I get the sense that this was recorded live together, and if that’s the case, locking in a little bit tighter could also help.

Fucking funeral doom opener. YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU. That opening guitar note was heavenly for me. The synth comes in perfectly for that eerie sci-fi sort of vibe, but then the additional guitar and vocals take the track into the absolute depths. Singer here is top notch in my opinion. Growling vocalist is also nailing it. Only gripe with the production might be the drums sounding a bit mechanical and not as full as I’d want, but that’s also a stylistic thing. Toms and cymbals could for sure be a bit louder though. Guitar tones are on point and very pleasant to listen to. The track itself progresses in a way that doesn’t feel like it’s six minutes. Great job.

Love the guitar tone here. It has a surfy vibe to it. I feel like some notes are just a tad out of tune maybe? Great vibe overall though. The mix could use a slight polish here and there. Lead guitar is a tad loud for example but nothing egregious. Something about the fade out is strange. I feel like you should have played longer so the fade out didn’t catch that last chord.

I’m not a prog guy or a vocals guy so this isn’t really for me. But as far as production and execution go, it’s all solid. Vocals feel like there too close to my face (back them off a tad and add in some more verb/delay?). But the organ, guitars, bass, and drums are all balanced well and cut through. Acoustic section was my favorite (and that 6 second part at 2:25). Really well performed and recorded. Overall a really well done track that did feel kinda long, but not as long as it actually was.

Ok this one sounds thicc. I really dig it. My only gripe is that the palm muted guitars sound to perfect. Don’t know if it’s that they’re sampled, or quantized to perfection, or just played too damn well, or maybe it’s just a modern sound that I’m not used to. But they give me a bit of a robotic vibe which is not super my cup of tea but also does very much sound like it’s a professional production made for an OST. (Maybe i’m just such a sloppy guitarist, that your playing makes me call you a robot) I like that the lead guitar is not overbearing and sits in the mix perfectly. I can hear both the lead melody and the thicc chonk of the rhythm guitars very clearly. I could loop this track plenty and I don’t think I would grow too tired. Very cool track Great job

This one’s got a bit of the DoD maximalism, but not too hard. It’s very well arranged, almost sounds too busy but I think it stays just under that threshold. It’s a good mix. Lead guitar has that classic “guitar solo” tone that suits the style perfectly. Acoustic guitar sounds real nice. Horn adds a nice touch. Strings sound a bit too sampley to my ears. For me this track stays at like “maximum” level for too long with so many bits and pieces demanding my attention. NEVERTHELESS. This is a very high quality entry that is executed very well. Only real area of improvement in my eyes is the vst strings. Everything else feels very purposeful and well done.

Love this track to death. Acoustic section flows seamlessly into the next. Nailed the ambient metal section in my opinion. The distant drums are a good choice for this I think. I love the dark sound of the lead guitar. Overall vibe here is very nice. The drums (especially snare and snare rim) have a very noticeable reverb which distracts me a little. Maybe a low pass on the reverb could help that. Arrangement and playing is kept simple which I really appreciate. I like that kind of lo fi acoustic guitar sound, I feel it goes well with this song. Tons of potential here. Really nice performances by a lot of people. We’re starting with the deep cuts I see. Starting with the longies too. Reverby guitar sounds great and atmospheric. Not huge on the drum sound, but it might sound better once it goes faster. Vocal performance is restrained in a good way, very fun performance. Wall of sound hits me like truck, though I’m still not a fan of the snare, doesn’t come through the thickness of the sound well and it’s missing some punch. Really love the vibe of everything else though, do I hear a faint touch of growls in the background? Now it’s going from sludge to black metal, really like how this arrangement progresses. Arrangement wise this is fantastic, when you see the length you immediately worry about how the time will be spent, but it flows really well and it really earns its length, lots of details, cool transitions and very awesome performances.

Game(s): Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
Good sound choices, instruments don’t sound fully rhythmically locked in, you can kinda immediately tell how a lot of the instruments are playing juuuust outside of each other. Lead guitar sounds nice and dreamy. I like the details and embellishments in the soundscape, although the track as a whole starts to get a little repetitive after a while without too many changes or surprises. Mixing is mostly alright but rhythm funkiness aside, I think a lot of the mudiness could be EQ-cleared up (which is probably exacerbated by all the reverb). I don’t hate the fadeout, conceptually, but it feels like instruments don’t fade out in equal measure (some fade faster than others), and the fact that I can hear the last note pretty clearly still kinda defeats the purpose.

This starts pretty metal just like one would expect from the title, what kinda synthy thingy is that? I think it’s buried enough that I can’t tell what it’s supposed to be doing which makes it sound kinda awkward as a whole. Rest of the band sounds fucking solid though. Oooooohhh hell yeah ⅞ groove!! I LOVE THAT SHIT. Great awesome guitar playing. Lots of power in the vocal performance and it’s mixed very clearly front and center, though I’d add more reverb to it to mesh better with the instrumental. It’s also sorely missing some harmonizations. For an 8+ minute track it does get a little samey a lot of the time but the flow and transitions are pretty well done and it keeps sounding like one cohesive song. The Opeth break at 5:20 on the other hand comes out of fucking nowhere, transition wise, though it does sound pretty beautiful. That lead solo towards the end tasty as fuck. My only real gripe is that the structure is kinda off with the acoustic break, it’s not built up or transitioned well at all and it kinda feels like 2 different songs. That’s however a minor nitpick in an otherwise really enjoyable track.

Awesome metal sound, very punchy guitar+bass+drum sound, it feels like someone is punching my ears. As much as I love the rhythm guitar sound it might be overshadowing the leads which are quiet by comparison. Heavy and fun right out the gate, production is impeccable, guitar tones are delicious. Master is a bit quiet for this kind of production, though I guess I’m just spoiled by all the -6 LUFS metal songs in this competition. Arrangement progresses very nicely and keeps the really nice and balanced tones throughout. The string sample is kinda fakey especially when it’s exposed as a lead melody, but it’s a nitpick. Lead horn at 3:00 is very quiet and I assume it’s a vst? Yeah, my only real criticism is that some of the orchestral sampling sounds very unrealistic in this context and it’s also very buried in the mix (which is also probably intentional?), it’s not a problem in most of the piece but it’s noticeable whenever they’re used as melodic leads. Other than that the arrangement develops well, the playing is great and the production is clean as hell.

Game(s): Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi
Ooooh immaculate vibes, that drum sound fits so well with the kind of reggae vibe. Gets very repetitive very quickly though, especially since the melody on the lead plays a ton of constant eighth notes. Transitions are also kinda wonky. I like the overall vibe, but I think you could flesh out this a lot more to really get it going.
Silent Tears
Game(s): Last Window: The Secret of Cape West
I dig the very reverby ambienty acoustic sound, oooohhh the responding guitars on the sides that almost sound like a delay effect are a great touch. I was going to complain about the guitar sound being a little too bright, but I actually really like how there’s several guitars in the arrangement mixed in slightly different ways to create a full soundscape, that’s so good. Unfortunately ))))): not huge on the metal part in comparison, though I get how it works in context of the arrangement, but the way the guitar tones don’t really fit the rest of the mix for me. Very minor nitpick though, and I really really enjoy this otherwise.

Game(s): Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
This sounds less like a supermarket and more that I just walked into a rave. The style is so well done though. I can’t really tell what the vocals are doing, but with the style it might be intentional? I honestly love how unique this is. Reverby guitar fits great. It gets a little busy in the second half but it’s nothing crazy. This shit right after the previous track is crazy coordination. Awesome work.
The Wah’s Still Got It (and He’s Bringing the Mojo Back)
Game(s): Mario Kart DS
Oooohhh what is this garage sounding drumkit? It has a DIY sound in the best way, and the playing is great. Love the vibe in this one just as much as the last one, it feels more restrained but it gives it a very catchy groove. Drums are KILLING IT. Bass person rocking it also. The e-piano! I think the solo features could be louder, they get a bit buried in the mix and while I can still hear everything, I’m not able to really pick out all the details, I can still tell those performances are fire though. Really fucking fun interpretation of this source with enough changeups to keep me on my toes.
MULTIWAH

Oh that snare sound is FUCKING, I love how it slaps me in the face. Great arrangement for this song honestly, very head bopping. Production is masterful. Can’t believe DoD would be making me fall in love with 3 electronic tracks in a row but here I am. I love how playful the percussion is in this. Lots of tasty ear candy, not much else to say. WAH.
War Never Changes
Game(s): Mega Man ZX
Very torn on that intro, I get the idea of it arrangement wise but it doesn’t sound locked in enough both performance and mixing wise in comparison to what comes after. Once the full metal band comes in the mixing is clean as HELL. Vocals have this quality of overproduced pop rock that really fit this so well, both performance and mixing wise. Very awesome production across the board. Vocal performance goes ridiculous, especially in those raspy high notes, god DAMN. The guitar solo by mysterious anonymous person that I definitely don’t know the identity of goes incredibly hard. Not a single miss in this (except maybe the first few seconds which I didn’t care for, but I can let that slide).
I Dream of Clapping (Three Minutes Clapping ReMIX)
Game(s): NEO: The World Ends with You
Whoaaaa very interesting trippy electronic beat to start, makes me curious right away. Not really feeling the vocals unfortunately, they’re well mixed for the most part and cut through the mix nicely, but the flow of the performance is kind of monotone and doesn’t have a lot of excitement, which makes the rapping less effective, it’s not just about pronouncing the words, you also gotta put some more theatrics into it to really sell it. Ooooohhh the heavily autotuned vocals in the chorus on the other hand sound pretty great, it’s a nice surprise and it’s super catchy, it gets a little off-rhythm at points but it’s nothing crazy. I think that rapping flow could use some work and unfortunately it does affect my enjoyment since it’s a pretty central part of the song, but everything else here sounds pretty great!
New Thing
Game(s): New Super Mario Bros.
This sounds new alright! Damn, I wish this got fleshed out so I could vote for it, that sound is so fucking tasty.
Twinleaf Tea
Game(s): Pokémon Diamond & Pearl
The stop/go rhythm of the guitar and the drums gives this a great calming groove, like something playing in the background while I’m chilling in a coffee shop. The acoustic recording is not the best, sounds like something that was recorded in a big open space and catching a lot of ambient noise which kinda spoils the clarity, though it’s well integrated into the mix despite that. Very bossa vibes at parts. I also like how the groove keeps changing, awesome drums here! Honestly the drums are the hero of this track, but the arrangement also flows really nicely, only real nitpick is I wish the acoustic guitar was cleaner, it’s fine for the most part but the subpar recording can get very exposed in spots.
A True Gentleman Leaves No Puzzle Unsolved
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Oh mannnn what are you doing to me. I haven’t played this game, but somehow this genre feels really fitting? Might be dead wrong though. The instrumentation here is killing me, what an ensemble. Violin sounds super clean, I’m not sure what instrument the second lead is but it sounds just as good, is it a melodica? Thing that’s not gelling well with me here is the drums, the playing is good, but the groove sounds veeery at odds with the rest of the instrumentation and it kinda ruins the vibe for me, for this kinda piece I’d kinda like the drums to be more laid back and spaced out, but it sounds more like it’s leaning more on the fast frantic side which is an odd choice. Performances across the board are top notch.
Masque Des Miracles
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Really nice piano sound. Accordion!! Fuck yeah!!! Another one that just does great vibes so well with good instrumentation, it’s one of those things that really makes you appreciate that DoD live instrument rule. Lots of nice performances. Mix is pretty crystal clear. Lots of great synergy between performers. Absolutely fantastic.
Professor Latino
Game(s): Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
I know they’re all Layton but these three tracks all flow so well together. Less latin sounding than I expected from the title but the performances here are amazing. Oh there’s the percussion!! Now we’re talking. Holy crap anons this hits all the right notes. What a bunch of disgustingly talented individuals you. I really don’t have much to say, this just blew me away.
cmon i just need one more piece to finish this chibirobo puzzle
Game(s): Puzzle Swap
Fun and chill, it kinda reminds me of some of the Chicory soundtrack. The instrumentation is really fun also.
To the Holy Mountain we sail (feat jethro tull from temu)
Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Jaw harp fuck yeah. This is another one that reminds me of how awesome it is to have live instruments, especially when EVERYTHING sounds live. Cute whistling, great guitars, flutes, percussion, all the performances here are really great. Mix sounds interesting, it’s a very amateur sound in the sense that it feels like a bunch of people grouped together in a really small room. The performances are all incredibly charming though, very fun listen.
Spirit Guide
Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Wow the way this starts is great, immediately makes me curious and excited to hear more. There’s so much detail crammed in just that first minute with everything you’re doing with the soundscape and the electronic beat, it makes for such a rich listen. The woodwind performance is also fantastic. I don’t know this source, but it kinda feels like you grabbed a short jingle and squeezed all the juice into a really complete package. Favorite so far.
I was so Lost in The Woods and Also in My Sanity that I had a Mental Collapse
Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Look at that length, look at that GIRTH. Interesting intro. Maybe too brainy for me. I get the gist of it, but it takes a little bit too long? Maybe it’s following a pattern and it doesn’t stop until it ends but it’s not something I’m paying attention to on a casual listening. It gets more interesting later on when the drums come in and there’s a groove I can follow better now. Production and performances are pretty top notch throughout the whole thing. Arrangement wise this is uuuuhhhhh hard to describe. I think I get what it’s trying to do, and I don’t mind some heady music or stuff that is intentionally trying to be more unconventional (I assume from the title that there’s bound to be some degree of uncomfort in the listening experience), but considering the length and everything happening, for me this starts to cross into a territory of trying to be complex for the sake of it, which I mean, as a musician exercise that’s fine, but it’s not gonna do much for me otherwise. I do appreciate the work put into it though, especially for the performers this must be one HELL of a practice session.
Drink Water (hey look a river)
Game(s): The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes
Weird effect going on in those rhythm acoustic guitars which I’m not sure is intentional, they sound a little phased/chorused? I legitimately can’t tell if it’s a phaser effects or the recordings are literally phasing into each other, but hey, it works. Guitar lead sound has a pretty good quality. The sound makes me picture this listening inside of a watery cave. Sudden e-piano! Works well enough. Overall this is pretty serene and enjoyable.
Music Box Memento
Game(s): Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
Oooooh going all in on the concept I love it, I assume this is performed on a keyboard but goddamn if I wouldn’t love an actual recording of a real music box, this is still really neat though!
Shift’s Over!
Game(s): eCrew Development Program
Considering the context of this “game” the style of this song sounds pretty on point. The drums are honestly kind of repetitive and it gets a bit grating after a while, vocals are awesome! The performance sounds kind of operatic which is unexpected for this style but it fits well enough. Lyrics are funny and honestly a fun commitment for an arrangement of a game like this. You win the deep cut award this month.
