I know they’re all Layton but these three tracks all flow so well together. Less latin sounding than I expected from the title but the performances here are amazing. Oh there’s the percussion!! Now we’re talking. Holy crap anons this hits all the right notes. What a bunch of disgustingly talented individuals you. I really don’t have much to say, this just blew me away.

Mmmm sax on the rocks to kick it off. Great vibe and groove when the rest of the band joins in fully. Lovely trumpet lead!! Hahahaha oh boy, that Careless Whisper quote – anon knows what I like. This one wants you to move your booty, and I’m disinclined to say no!

Great use of horns and great balance mixing; feels like I can hear the distinct horns without them becoming a nebulous mass. I love when the percussion drops out and it becomes a little bit of a round. The adding and removing of layers/instruments overall is really thoughtfully done and has great effect of keeping the piece live and exciting. Probably in my top 5 DoD tracks of the past six months, though I’m biased in loving jazz. Truly excellent work, I’ll be downloading this to listen to later.

This is such a good recording and arrangement for this style. No pop extra compression or mixing. Just legit playing and separation.
I can’t give good critique on this. Maybe this should have been played in my house instead of on a computer >:(
Thanks anon!!

Some good trumpet playing and nice Latin rhythms. This one has a good “live band” feel, but it is more focused on the wind instruments, which are all played really solidly! The trumpet and sax are both really good in this one. I like how this one pays particular focus on key instruments throughout and really lets them shine. Wait, I recognize that riff…

Unreal hearing this back to back with the other Layton tracks, there’s a whole mini-EP of Layton arrangements that fit so well together, even though they each bring their own flair to the mix. This is stunningly recorded, mixed, and performed. Love all the little cameos on the sax solo, I see you, you cheeky bastard 😉 If I had to nitpick anything, it’s that the piano feels dull in the mix, it feels like the writing wants to bring a little more energy than it ultimately does. There’s also a couple of moments, such as 3:08, where the lack of low-end punch in the drums makes the big synced hits not have quite the impact it feels like you wanted it to. Ultimately though, this is a fantastic track that deserves every bit of love it’s getting.

Starting out with a nice sax group, sounds good. Trombone, nice. One minute in and we get the full Latin jazz vibes, very cool. Love the piano sound. Great arrangement all around. The rhythm section, the horn instruments, the percussion, all really good. Really nothing to pick at yet! Fun solo trades! I heard you, Careless Whisper quote. 🙂

wowowow. This was made in one month for a vgm contest? Not part of a touring latin jazz group that’s been playing for 30 years? This is spectacularly well done. I don’t even know how to critique this. Maybe when the bass pops its head up for a little solo it sounds a little muffled? But thats the nitpick of nitpicks. This track is of the highest quality. It might be my pick for gold.

Nice opening! Brass chord being accentuated by the wind chimes and slow cymbal hits – before the sax gets to take that nice initial melody line. Really nice interplay with the other saxophones as they come in, and drums are nice and lightly balanced. Then brass and claves and piano help to really drive that latin rhythm through, as the bongos, shaker, and guiro? come in with the lead trumpet. Very well handled tradeoffs between the trumpet and the sax in the next section, before the percussion and piano come in to take a turn to lead. Bass getting a turn to lead is also pretty exqusitie, and really loving the percussion break! I would have loved to play on this track anon (since I have all these instruments).
This track really takes it home – great job anon(s) this is a beauty

where’s the low end? though I get it. low end is a nightmare to mix. Also, I think at around 2:01, Brass could’ve used some more glue/punch. but that’s me nitpicking. holy moly. the performances and the arrangement are spot on. Good stuff! keep bringing more jazz to DoD.

How many wind instruments are in this? I think I recognize trumpet, trombone, sax… In any case, this is such a delight! Definitely one of my highest rated, since I love when VGM gets the latin treatment. I’m not familiar with the source, but I’m willing to bet this is one heck of an arrangement. Performances are beyond amazing too, all of them!
